Prayers for the Winter Solstice, Christmas, and the Return of the Light
I no longer care whether "God" is referred to as God or Goddess or Allah or Krishna any other "name" of God, because I have had the experience of understanding that there is nothing that is NOT God.
The central prayer/mantra of the Sufis is
La illaha il Allah hu
which is often translated as "There is no reality but God," or "There is no reality but the One." And in my path of studying various religions, spiritual traditions, and mystic visions, I was thrilled to find out that Allah means both "yes" and "no." So the true meaning of the word Allah is really like the concept of Yin and Yang, embracing both polarities.... That which is masculine and feminine, light and dark, all that is manifest, and all that is unmanifest. So my favorite "name" of God is Allah -- but even that seems too narrow for me. So the word I am most comfortable with is Universe. I use the term The Universe to mean God or Goddess or other name of God. And so, I wanted to use a background that reflects my Universal view of God-ness.

O Allah,
place in my heart light
and in my

and on my
right light
and on my

and above
me light
and beneath
me light
and in
front of me light
and behind
me light
and expand
for me this light
Light in my
nerves
and light
in my flesh
and light
in my blood
and light
in my hair
and light
in my skin
and light
in my soul
and light
in my tongue.

A Blessing for the Day
May the Light of your soul guide you.
May the Light of your soul bless the work you do with the love and
warmth of your heart.
May you see in what you do, the beauty of your own soul.
May the sacredness of your work bring healing, light, and renewal to
those who work with you and to those who see and
receive your work.
May your work never weary you.
May it release within you wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and
excitement.
May you always be present in what you do.
May you never become lost in bland absence.
May the day never burden you.
May the dawn find you awake and alert, approaching your new day with
dreams possibilities and promises.
May evening find you gracious and fulfilled.
May you go into the night blessed sheltered and protected.
May your soul calm, console, and renew you.
~John O'Donohoe

"Light descends on us,
it fits like a glove,
overwhelmed by grace,
I am Love."

Written on Christmas Eve, 1513
I
salute you. I am your friend, and my love for you goes deep. There
is nothing I can give you which you have not. But there is much,
very much, that, while I cannot give it, you can take. No heaven can
come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today. Take heaven! No
peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this present little
instant. Take peace! The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind
it, yet within our reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in darkness,
could we but see. And to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to
look!
Life is so generous a giver. But we, judging its gifts by their
covering, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the
covering, and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love by
wisdom, with power. Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel's hand
that brings it to you. Everything we call a trial, a sorrow or a duty,
believe me, that angel's hand is there. The gift is there and the wonder
of an overshadowing presence. Your joys, too, be not content with
them as joys. They, too, conceal diviner gifts.
Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty beneath its
covering, that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven. Courage
then to claim it; that is all! But courage you have, and the knowledge
that we are pilgrims together, wending through unknown country home.
And so, at this time, I greet you, not quite as the world sends greetings,
but with profound esteem and with the prayer that for you, now and
forever, the day breaks and shadows flee away.
